  • Various tests can help assess if you and your dog are prepared for therapy work. It's critical to ensure your dog is ready, as you are responsible for their behavior. Since you know your dog best, evaluate their readiness using the following test and let us know your results.


  • · Is your dog well socialized?

I. The dog has been introduced to a variety of places, situations, people, and other dogs since it was a puppy.

II. The dog is let out in the yard every day but does not go beyond that.


  • · Does your dog jump up on people?

I. This behavior is not permitted; the dog receives consistent training and reminders when necessary.

II. The dog jumps up when people ring the bell, approach the street, talk to the owner, or walk by.


  • · Are you surprised when your dog shows positive behavior?

I. No, regular training has led to an expectation of appropriate conduct.

II. Yes, the dog's actions are unpredictable.


  • · How does your dog react to rolling shopping carts, rollerblades, or skateboards?

I. The dog watches with interest as these objects move past.

II. The dog reacts by barking and growling.


  • · How do you and your dog respond to unexpected situations?

I. Response is appropriate and calm.

II. The response is more reactive or defensive.


  • · How does your dog behave at the veterinarian or groomer?

I. The dog cooperates with the procedures.

II. Staff use additional precautions, such as a muzzle.


  • · Have you and your dog participated in formal training or practiced training at home?

I. Yes, participation in at least a beginner class and ongoing practice at home have occurred.

II. We’re perfect; we don’t need no stinkin’ training! (dog drags handler away…).


  • · Does your dog have any health problems?

I. No, he’s fine. He sees the vet regularly and I check him frequently for lumps and sensitive areas.

II. He has this interesting case of flatulence. Oh, and bad breath.


  • · How does your dog accept a treat?

I. The dog sits and waits for a command, then gently takes the treat from my hand.

II. The dog reacts unpredictably when offered a treat.


  •  Do people react positively to your dog?

I. Yes, most individuals smile and are comfortable interacting with him.

II. No, their reactions indicate discomfort.


  • · What is your dog's response upon seeing another dog?

I. He shows mild curiosity and wags his tail.

II. He exhibits aggressive behaviors such as barking, growling, or pulling on the leash.


  • ·Does your dog behave appropriately around children?

I. Yes, he approaches calmly, wags his tail, and refrains from jumping or startling them.

II. No, he displays inappropriate or unpredictable behavior towards children.


  • · Does your dog ever bark excessively?

I. No, excessive barking is not tolerated, and the dog understands this expectation.

II. Yes, the dog frequently barks at various stimuli, including the doorbell.


  • · Does your dog show aggression toward strangers, children, or service personnel?

I. No, he is generally friendly and enjoys interacting with people.

II. Yes, there are instances where he exhibits unprovoked aggression.


  • · How do service personnel respond when they see you with your dog?

I. Service personnel are comfortable around my dog and often interact with him positively.

II. Many service personnel actively avoid contact due to concerns about my dog's behavior.


Scoring

If you answered “I.” for all items, congratulations. You and Fido appear well-prepared, and it is advisable to schedule your test at your earliest convenience.

However, if you selected even one “II.” response, it may be beneficial to enroll in a training course before attempting the therapy dog evaluation with your dog. This preparation can help ensure a more successful experience.
